Germany
8.5.2017 - 15.5.2017       720km

Yeay, we have left the first country behind. We spent nice 8 days in here and we cycled 720 km.
Our family and friends released us on the Czech – German border like the Chinese lantern lights and
wished us luck. The first day wasn’t really lucky however. We got a little bit lost right behind Žitava while
it was raining and so cold that we weren’t feeling fingers on our hands. But eventually everything went
out well. We found a camping place without a map when it was already dark and we ended up our very
first day with.
We took a lesson and on the very next day we bought a map of the bike path Ondra – Nisa of which we
cycled 500 km. It was all about endless plain fields, nobody around but the strong wind blowing against
us and swamplands full of birds. So if you like birdies, make sure you try this bike path too.
During the ride we were watching egrets, showing their slim bodies, ravens, laughing to us that we didn’t
manage to take a picture of them, storks, which were making shadows above our heads and flocks of
mallards that were bombarding us with their excrements.
Up to Rostock we needed to cycle on the car roads many times. However the drivers were very
considerate, almost like we as bikers would have had a priority on the road.
The weather was playing with us all along. At first it was raining, right after that it was so shiny we got
sunburnt (Káťa had small blebs on her ears) and then a storm came so we got banished from the road to
a car wash for an hour.
With food is wasn’t easy either. We were frozen to bones and we wanted to boil a soup. But we found
out that we were carrying a bad camping stove for the whole time. And in Germany there are no tiny
grocery shops in every village like in Czech Republic so often we had to cycle even up to 70 km without
any meal. And the best are the Sundays. On Sundays Germans really don’t work. So even if you find a
supermarket on the way, don’t celebrate.
Overall we find Germany very clean, smooth and good smelling. But if you want to visit it it’s very useful
to learn few basic phrases. Germans aren’t too willing to communicate in other language with you.
What did we like?
